Description: Above the bay of Machico, where the first Portuguese sailors disembarked, lies the Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra. The original course, constructed in 1937, was redesigned in 1991 by the famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones. He created a spectacular and completely new 27 hole course integrated into one of the most beautiful locations created by nature. Here, golf and nature live in perfect harmony with sport and the environment. Be it competition or pleasure, the passions of those who play at Santo da Serra are always satisfied. Holes 2, 3 and 4 of the Machico Course are unforgettably ingrained in the memories of those who have played there. The Machico and Desertas Courses are those usually used for the Madeira Island Open whilst the Serras Course, mildly flat, maintains the same level of play. With four optional tees at each hole, the player is offered various levels of play enabling straightforward, relaxing rounds as well as more challenging ones. This is the reason Santo da Serra annually hosts the Madeira Open, a tournament on the PGA European Tour. Golfing stars, many of whom are Ryder Cup players, praise the excellent quality of fairways and greens. The semi-roughs and roughs are proof of the meticulous care given to course conditions. A true botanical garden, the course is adorned with four beautiful lakes surrounded by trees offering shade from the shimmering Atlantic sunshine. The Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra offers its players diverse facilities. The sumptuously decorated Clubhouse, aside from the lounge, restaurant and bar, boasts a terrace from whence one may view the practice areas regular exercises of a splendid training facility comprising two putting-greens, a chipping-green, bunker-practice facillities and a driving range. The Pro-Shop offers all manner of golfing merchandise as well as hiring out of golfing equipment. The Club supplies buggies and trolleys as well as a buggybar service. The Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra is located 20 minutes from the centre of Funchal and 5 minutes from both the Airport and Machico. To get there, coming from Funchal, take the “Via Rápida” toward the airport, leave at Exit 21 and follow the signs to Santo da Serra. History Santo da Serra was the cradle of golf in Madeira. As can be seen in photographs from as early as 1933, golf was played on the grounds adjacent to the Pousada da Serra Hotel. There, nine holes all par 3 founded golf in Madeira. In 1935 construction work started on the Santo da Serra Golf Club´s Favellas Course. Its nine holes were inaugurated on 25 February 1937. Designed by an unknown architect, the course was 2.396 metres long, par 35, with three par 3's, four par 4's and two par 5's. Surrounded by eucalyptus trees and grass bunkers, it did not have automated irrigation but was nevertheless well maintained throughout the year. The Clubhouse operated from the Pousada da Serra Hotel and much later, between 1965 and 1991, from Casa de Chá do Santo da Serra. On 11 March 1967, the National Minister of Education created the Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra (Madeira) which continued with the management of the golf course. In 1988, by public concession attributed by the Regional Government of Madeira, Sociedade Planal, S.A., assumed responsibility for the construction and development of a new 27 hole golf course designed by the famous North-American architect Robert Trent Jones. Until 30 September 1991, when the 18 hole Machico and Desertas Courses were inaugurated, golf was limited to six of the nine holes of the original course. The Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra revoked its rights to the golf course in favour of 140 rounds of golf per week for the use of its members. Simultaneously, Planal, S.A. created the Golf Club of Madeira. In January 1993, the first Madeira Island Open took place. A tournament on the PGA European Tour. Mark James was the winner. On 12 October 1996, by intervention of the Regional Government of Madeira, Planal, S.A. ceded the golf course development concession to the Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra. Madeira Golf Club members were absorbed into the Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra. On 28 May 1998, the Club constitution was registered by public deed, officially naming the Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra. On 10 October 1998, the Club inaugurated the Serras Course, completing the initial 27 hole project. The new Clubhouse was, in turn, inaugurated on 13 September 2000. Of interest, the Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra promoted the playing of golf for the first time on the island of Porto Santo, where it has operated a summer driving range since 1996. In 1997 the Club presented the Regional Government of Madeira with plans to construct an 18 hole golf course on Porto Santo, between Pico Ana Ferreira and Ribeiro Salgado. |
